Slacking...Well Not Really

Yes, I know I have been slacking on my blogging duties, but can you blame a girl!?!? I have been pretty busy the last few weeks. I did the finishing touches on the review I had been working on for the magazine's Web site. It will go live July 8Th and I will be sure to post a link for you all to check out! I have also been doing busy work for other people there. Finding links to add to blogs and updating pages. Reformatting the hotel directory is taking a lot of time, but will be nice when it is done! It really makes me want to go on vacation... hm maybe a luxury tree house hotel in Australia. Sounds fun... plus I really want to go zip lining again.

I went to the Mets vs Mariners game this week. It was fun considering that I went by myself. It was nice to get out an enjoy the nice weather and throw back a cold Bud Light. The game itself was pretty lame though ha. I had my first venture to Queens on the Subway... kind of a ghetto area, but wasn't too bad. I can't say that I would venture out there by myself at night though. I don' think I would ever want to live there either... not a very pretty area... covered in graffiti and stuff.

We are moving rooms next weekend. Lets hope the room is decent sized like the one we are in now, but nicer. I don't know I'm not getting my hopes up. It's kind of a pain in the butt, but at least I don't have a ton of stuff to move so it shouldn't be too bad.

Working a lot at the Gap and usually end up getting convinced to stay longer.Got to make that money somehow! I am working the 4th of July, shouldn't be bad because of holiday pay. Why not let people who have families go enjoy it. I don't have anything big planned so I volunteered. Things are going well there. Stressful, but like I said most the people are really nice so it makes it more pleasurable to be there. Learning a lot in both jobs (magazine and Gap). Multitasking efficiently has been a big thing I have picked up at both. I could multi-task before, but I think I am becoming quicker and more efficient when I have to multi-task. I am slowly learning to have more patience with people and situations as well. Its just not worth getting irritated or mad over most things. I have a short time here and I should enjoy it all for what its worth. Not everyone gets this opportunity. I want to start applying this attitude to everything in my life and hopefully it will help me ease a majority of the stress that I put on my shoulders. Its just not worth it. Relax, live, and have fun. Yes, that's what I am going to start doing.

Also, the P.R. person for the Columbia Roller Derby Girls contacted me about the video I had made of them and put up on YouTube. They liked it and are going to use it for their Website and such! Hooray another clip. Its always nice when people enjoy the work that you do. I really wanted to get my own professional quality video camera so that I can start taking advantages of opportunities given to me to shoot local music stuff. Bummer when I can't. I will just have to start saving up to get something!

Last, but not least funny thing happened while walking in Times Square. There was some old chick trying to be like the naked cowboy. She was out in lingerie playing the guitar early morning Wednesday in the middle of Times Square. I was a little surprised, but then again not really. It is New York and all, but WOW ha ha.

Well, I work a full shift until close again tonight. Enjoy the week! OOOOh and p.s. its almost my birthday!

The Whole Week =-)

I am posting the whole week in this one entry because I have been too busy/tired all week to find time to do it each day. So here goes nothing...

Monday
Same ol' same ol' at the magazine. I did more work on the hotel directory. Other than that there wasn't a whole lot going on. I left early because I was dragging from the weekend spent working at the gap. The whole closing and getting out at midnight then being up by 8 or 9 to open doesn't fare so well with me. On the walk home I decided to stop in for pizza at the deli because there was no line and figured what the hay I'll have a beer too. So I sat at the window and people watched. After one beer I decided for another one, but realized that there was a minimum $5 for credit cards. So I got two.... hmmm three 24ozs after not drinking in awhile and not eating a while lot that day left me wondering why I got three! At least I slept well that night.

Tuesday
I had the day off. It was almost a 100 degrees out, so I decided not to go out on an adventure in the city. Instead I lazed around my room and relaxed. I eventually ventured out for dinner and boy was it hot out! I went to speedys for a bowl of fresh fruit and a bagel... delicious, especially in the heat. After that I went to the Manhattan Mall on the way back and looked around for a little bit. I wasn't in the best of moods that day due to some issues that are taken care of now so no need to go into details.

Wednesday
Got to go in late to the internship since I didn't have anything to do until our web meeting at 11am. Sat through that and got assigned to make some maps. I spent some time creating it and setting up a google account for the magazine so that all of their maps could be centrally located. The shelving we ordered for the web closet finally came in. I built those and re-organized. It looks fantastic and everyone is happy with it. I mailed some more stuff and did some file organizing/labeling for others. I had a meeting to get a product that I am going to review. That went well, and hopefully we get it in the studio to get shot this week so I can get it back in time. Not a bad day at all.

Thursday
Another day at the magazine. I did more work on adding google maps to our account. I got to use my Facebook savvy to create some html images for the magazine's Facebook page. Not to bad. I worked mainly on the hotel directory though. I also had to go to the art meeting for web. Scheduled in the shoot for my product review. Nothing super exciting, but cool to see how things work. The hotel directory is getting tedious, but its fun learning about all the cool hotels there are in different parts of the world.

Friday
This was the longest day ever! I worked at the magazine til 3pm. I just did hotel directory and facebook stuff, so not a whole lot. After I left there I had to run back to the hotel and grab my name tag for work. I worked 4-close. It was exhausting, but I got it done. Lets hope the paycheck is worth it! Nothing too terribly exciting happened at work or in general. Pretty lame-o Friday! Oh, but my keycard for my room didn't work when I got back so that was fun ha. Good thing for security!

Saturday
Yesterday I slept in and then went to work around 2:30 til close. I figured it would be a long non-exciting day. It started out that way. I was in the "casual" section in the women's department today, so no bra and undie folding. I cashiered for a little bit though. This is when things went down. I was helping this lady with a few screws loose in the head and she kept forgetting things and such, so I started helping another guest while she was off looking at some more shirts. She came back and was asking me if I could see if we had a size in something, so I told her to hold on a minute and I would after I was through helping the guest, because I can only have one screen option up at a time. The lady was like oh you're still helping them. The guest was like yea she is still helping us (clearly annoyed by the crazy lady and I don't blame her). The crazy lady was like you don't have to be so rude about it I am a customer to and then the guest I was helping was like yea well I am a customer to. Then the crazy lady is like well you don't have to be racist about it. It escalated form there into a lot of cursing and such. All of this while I am trying to ring the guest out. We screamed in the walkie for a manager because the guest was about to fight the crazy lady. As the manager was trying to escort the crazy lady out, the guest ran up and was about to beat the crap out of her but a manager stepped in and tried to diffuse the confrontation (I am surprised the manager didn't get hit on accident). WOW I was like wtf! It scared me a little, but they said I handled it well. I guess that is good considering I had no clue what I was supposed to do, because I am not used to dealing with that at work! So yea, that was my adventured filled day at the Gap! Oh yea it rained a lot and I forgot my umbrella so I got soaked walking home... NICE ha.

Now, it is Sunday and I work 2- close again fun fun!

Friday's Post

Yesterday was a pretty good day. Mailed some stuff and called in products. I got put on a long term project that I hope to get done within the month. It's a lot of stuff, but I am learning about different places as I do it, so it's cool! The day went by pretty quick considering how tired I was when I got up.

After work I wondered around Times Square. The weather was just right... not too hot and not too cold. I ended up walking to the other side of town towards the Hearst building for dinner. I figured I would get some walking in since it was so nice out. The Gap wanted me to work, but I turned them down so that I could have some relax time. Today I got up and did laundry... a 3 hour event ha ha. Now it's off to work till 11:30pm tonight!

On a side note, if you are going to leave comments don't leave anonymous ones that are rude! Seriously grow some balls. This blog is a school assignment and if you don't have anything nice to say don't bother, find something better to do with your time.

So the big news of the day first... right before I was about to get off work one of the girls got a phone call saying that some guy was climbing the New York Times building. Apparently he wasn't the only one to do it today. The other guy only made it to like the 42nd floor, but the last guy made it to the top. According to my roommate who saw it all unfold, the streets were all stopped as 1000s of people watched and cheered when he got to the top.

Check out the video. Ridiculous and I am bummed I missed it!

At work I got to update stuff on the Web site and put my teamsite training to use! Good stuff... tedious, but I didn't mind. I love to learn new stuff. Tomorrow I get to go buy organic baby food for testing. Hmmm interesting. The Gap tried to get me to work after the internship tonight. What are they thinking!?!? I mean I already had worked a 10hr day today, what did they think the answer was going to be lol

I went to go do laundry and got all the way down there only to realize that I forgot my money. I guess I will do it tomorrow. I didn't realize it was going to cost so much to do it either, so I have to go get some change. Besides working at Gap most of Saturday and probably Sunday too the weekend should be fun and HOT. Yea it's supposed to be in the 90's yikes!

Goodnight everyone!

Training Day

Well I didn't write yesterday, because quite frankly there wasn't anything exciting to write about. I was actually having a pretty down day. Working so much has got me stressed like no other. It's part of life though and I just need to deal with it. I keep trying to tell myself that, but it's not always easy to believe it. It's not like things are horribly bad and hard on me here, but it'd definitely not a cake walk!

Today I spent the first hour of work in our weekly meeting. I found out I may get to write something for the newsletter on the idea I came up with. Keep your fingers crossed that I get to! I am also working on research for another project still. They may be giving me another one too. I also did more mailing of products and such today. As the title of this blog suggests, I went to a training to learn the content management system for the Web site. It's a little more in depth than what I have previously worked with, but I am confident that I can figure it out. I felt like I had a general idea of how to do things, because of my work at KOMU and the Missourian. It's good to know that my skills feel up to par with where they need to be.

I have so many ideas and suggestions for the magazine's Web site, but don't really know how to present them. Since I am new and only an intern I don't want to come off as overbearing or a know it all. For example the whole linking to citysearch.com drives me insane. I feel like we need to focus on making more web exclusive things. If everything is the same as in the magazine what makes a reader want to check out the site? I don't know maybe it's the newspaper background in me that feeds the need for more information. It's interesting seeing the completely different style of writing and such than what I am used to. Guess what no doing video either! I do kind of miss my video making days though, especially when we got to use the new HD cameras.

Tomorrow is another 10hr day. I think I will be doing more research and mailing. I also might get more information on the project they want me to work on... EXCITING!

Have a goodnight everyone!

Bryant Park

SO I AM PUTTING THIS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT IS BIG NEWS HA HA HA HA THE TUB IS FINALLY EFFIN' FIXED! HOORAY LETS ALL JUMP UP AND DOWN AND FREAKIN' CELEBRATE!

Well today was actually kind of fun. Right as I got off the elevator some of the web department girls asked me to join along to a breakfast recognizing our publisher. Mm mm and was there some yummy breakfast foods. The girls were so helpful to point out who was who. I enjoy hanging with them. I then went on a hunt for a tape measure to get the dimensions of the web closet, so that I can use my superb organizational skills to spruce it up. It's in need of desperate help. Maybe once I am done people will actually be able to find stuff. After that trip I did a little more fact checking until I got an email asking if I could go through the preview of the Web site's upcoming update to make sure all the links and such were working properly. I got it all done by the time I left and let me tell you it was a lot to go through. I got an email from the girl telling me many thanks and that I was very thorough and did a good job with it. Always nice to hear that when you are first starting out. The only problem I am having is remembering names and I always feel awful when I don't. Between Cookie and the Gap it's a lot of names! I will get em down soon though. One of the girls stopped by before she left and told me she has enjoyed having me working there so far. I really love it and could see myself working in an office like theirs.

For lunch, Sarah our boss you could say, took Justine the other intern and I out to lunch in Bryant Park. It was so nice out and the perfect day to enjoy lunch in the park. We got sandwiches at a place called Wich Kraft. It was really good, just as Sarah had said it would be. It was nice to just sit and chat since I have mostly been having lunch by myself since we go on our own schedule. The other intern is super nice too, which is good since we sit by one another all day.

Tomorrow I have to work 8:30am-12:30pm and then am getting drinks later that night with JD, which is the girl who interviewed me for the internship. Also my friend Guy Walker is coming to the city on Saturday with his nephew. I am meeting up with them for lunch, so that should be fun!

Have a good night everyone!!

Friday and the Weekend

I haven't posted all weekend, because I have been to dang tired! Friday was another day of fact checking and such. I did find out that I get to help on a project reviewing stuff (not sure if I can say what so you will have to wait and see). I am pretty excited about it. After work I came home and went to sleep at a record 7pm. No, I am not old! It's a matter of adjusting to a ridiculously busy schedule again. I am working close to 60+ hours a week with no days off. Price you have to pay when you want to learn!

I worked at the Gap on Saturday 9-6pm. Felt like a super long day, but what can you do. Hopefully my paycheck will be decent so that I can finally do some clothes shopping. I had some old lady want a bra fitting, so I gave her one. She proceeded to lift up her shirt to just her sports bra and try on the bra over it in the middle of the store. I kept trying to tell her she needed to go to the fitting room, but insisted on doing it right there. YIKES! I am scared to know what else I will see over the summer. Everyone keeps telling me that I haven't seen anything yet.

Sunday was another fabulous day spent at the Gap. I worked 9-4pm, so another long day. It started to get really busy when I left... so glad I wasn't closing! I didn't do too much after work. I went to my housing's hall meeting. What a waste of time. Then the rest of the night was spent relaxing watching the MTV Movie Awards.

Sorry guys, not a whole lot of excitement this weekend. I was lame what can I say. I am going to try and start taking more pictures. Send me suggestions of photos I should post or things you want to see in NYC and I will do my best to get them =)
